Third Party Software Does Not Work With DCE v4.1.4 or v4.2 For Tru64 UNIX v5.1A
(403GR 17-May-2002)

Problem

Third party software does not work with DCE v4.1.4 or v4.2 for Tru64 UNIX v5.1A.

Problems may also appear as:
  -RPC Binding Errors
-Applications do not bind with DCE 4.1.4 or 4.2
  -Incompatibility with application
  -Interface version error messages
  -Bad UUID version
-Could not establish identity for chpwd

Explanation

Entegrity Solutions corrected a problem with internal RPC structures that could have caused problems with RPC transmission of data. The RPC runtime library was changed, and this required that all images that use RPC be rebuilt. (Images includes applications.) There were some other operating system library changes also.

Because of these changes, software that depends on DCE had to be updated.  Entegrity notified vendors between October and December 2001.  Third-party versions after January 1, 2002 should have indications that they run on DCE 4.1.4 and 4.2.

Entegrity offers a backward-compatible patch for DCE v4.1.4, to help with the transition. There is no backward compatible patch for version 4.2 (which works only on Tru64 v5.1.A).

The following chart identifies the compatibility with versions since DCE 3.1.  Where not compatible, you must obtain updated third-party-software.

OS             DCE Version   Compatibility
5.0, 5.0A 3.1 N/A

5.0, 5.0A, 5.1 4.0  Yes

5.1 4.1,  4.1.1, 4.1.2, 4.1.3 Yes
4.1.4
4.1.4 (64bit_if)

No
Yes (Backward compatible:
ONLY for customers with existing applications)
4.1.5 (future)

No

5.1A 4.2
4.2.1 (future)
No
No

Solution

  1. Install the correct version of Entegrity DCE for the operating System.
  2. Install the most current version of applications that depend on Entegrity DCE 4.2, or 4.1.4. Versions after January 1, 2002 should have indications that they run on Entegrity DCE 4.2 or 4.1.4.
  3. Rebuild all images (including the stub/client code) that depend on DCE using either the DCE 4.1.4 ADK or the DCE 4.2 ADK (depending on the version being used).
